Adjustable bed leveling for the Mini

Post by jeeplvr » Mon Jun 08, 2015 8:57 pm

Made an adjustable bed for my UP Mini. It is machined from a 6"x6"x1/2" piece of aluminum. Holes are tapped to 3mm and fit through the existing holes (reamed to 3.5mm) in the original bed frame. In the pictures you can see that I replaced the three bearing set up with a four bearing set up. Its much more stable this way. I retained the original belt gripper but eliminated the original bed level support bracket and the four spring pins that the heater and perf board used to sit on.
I also added a steel support to the front of the bed frame. It gives the frame more rigidity. Its about 16hrs worth of work and works nicely.

Adding a fourth bearing to the bed support was a small challenge. I had to drill and cut slots for a modified bearing mount to attach to the frame. I made a template of the existing double bearing mount holes and transferred it to the single bearing mount area. I created a 3D printable double bearing mount that will work on either area.
The aluminum was machined on a small mill. Removing the aluminum took the most time.

Nice job! My primary gripe with the UP Mini is the sloppy tolerances for the print platform. On my Mini, the bed is only barely within limits of the software calibration, and that's after spending a lot of time inserting shims and tweaking the mountings. I am very interested in seeing this modification done though, as I was thinking about it again today when it became apparent that I really need to print a part raftless, and there's no way to do that on my Mini currently.

How much does the additional milled part affect your maximum build height on the Mini?

Yes the Mini bed has always been a source of annoyance for me. My bed design might work with the Mini software but I am not sure since I have converted to the Ramps/Arduino Mega controller. Besides now having an adjustable bed, adding the 4th linear bearing has made a difference in the rigidity of the bed assembly. Without replacing the entire Z-Y axis platform, there will always be wiggle in it. I compensate for some of this by slowing the print way down. Over all it is working fantastic.

Good to know that it's working well for you! It gives me hope that there might be a way to make some improvements.

Out of interest, about how much did the block of aluminium that you milled the new part from set you back?

The aluminum was cut to 6" x 6" 1/2" thick and I got two of them for 9.00 ea on eBay.

Here it is with the new glass to replace the perf board. Raftless printing from now on!
