Offering CAD modelling service for your 3D printing

Post by XRay » Tue Jul 24, 2012 1:33 pm

Dear All:

Recently I purchased one license of SpaceClaim (much more expensive than my UP 3D printer) so I can design my own stuff or modify downloaded models for 3D printing. Now I'm thinking maybe I can use this great tool to provide CAD modelling service to this community to help others that don't have tools powerful enough to design their own stuff and same time help myself cost justify my investment. This is my rough idea:

1, I will set up on my website a downloadable "product" with $10 unit price;
2, You can send me your sketches or images so I can evaluate how many units you should purchase;
3, If you're okay with the price then go ahead to purchase those units on my website through paypal;
4, Once I receive your payment I will do the modelling and send you the STL file for printing;
5, I can also modify the downloaded STL file to suit your unique requirement;

Since I do this mostly as a hobby I will try to keep my price reasonably low. Please PM me if you're interested and have such need.

Here's a good example when my little one got a birthday party to attend and instead of buying a present, we printed one.

1, So my kid first downloaded a dragon model:

2, Then I designed a base in SpaceClaim and also created embossed words (for demo only, actual wording is much more)

Happy birthday base designed in SpaceClaim

3,And this is how it looks like in UP software, ready to print:

Ready to print

And you can imagine the result when my kid presented this unique, specially designed present to the birthday girl, everyone wowed and wanted to come to my house to see how it is possible ...

Nice dragon XRay,
In theory, the red dragon shown in the Up software would tell you that its normals are the wrong way around, so you may want to use the 'fix' option, opr flip them aroundnin some other software if that doesnt work.
Cheers
Olaf

Thanks, Olaf. You're correct and the fix button worked well.
