How often shall we replace the air filter of the Up Box+?

Post by uplus2user » Thu Feb 01, 2018 5:36 pm

I read that the machine has built-in filter to filter out toxic particles. How often do we need to replace the filter? How much does it cost?

Hi.

Change every six months or so, not sure where in the world you are but in the UK cost is about £15 so the equivalent of half a roll of filament, so not a huge expense.

Thanks Owen. Is there an indicator to tell the users when to change? Do you find such filter helpful?

Sure thing.

No indicator so it's up to the user to remember.

I don't replace mine nearly often enough, sit next to three UPBOX machines printing ABS and don't notice anything bad going on. (I don't have great sense of smell and am not very sensitive to chemicals so others might not like it.)

I've no idea if it's doing anything, but it can't make it worse so happy to have it. One thing to note on my 2 original upboxes the filter case developed a rattle against the side of the case. This was louder than the actual printing but a simple fix.

Cheers,

Owen S.

Thanks. I have to choose between Up Box + with a filter that "might" work or a larger build volume printer. The problem is nobody knows how effective the filter is.

Thanks TT Joseph, nice pictures.

@uplus2user If I were choosing a printer then the filter would not be my deciding factor.

The upbox's unique selling point is a nice enclosed build chamber that does a good job of printing ABS in this price bracket.

If you want to print in ABS then it's a great choice. If you're using PLA then the build chamber is less important.

I'd also factor in closed source software that has mixed reviews, an early attempt at GCODE that seems to have fizzled out, and expensive non standard nozzles.

Reliability is so-so. I've got 5 TT machines and have had loads of issues but I'm hammering them in industry so I'd imagine they'd last a lot longer in a domestic setting, not run flat out.

Last time I wanted more print capacity I ended up buying more upbox machines because I couldn't find anything better. Slightly back-handed compliment.

Hoping for great things from the next generation upbox. 😀

Cheers Owen S.

Thanks Owen. So far, my choices are: Up Box+, Raise3D N2+, Ultimaker 3 and TAZ 6.

I consider Up Box+ because I had good experience using Up Plus 2 and large size and its filtration system. Does it inherit all the good things (such as nice working auto leveling, nice printing, good software) of the Up Plus 2? The size of about 28cm is the minimum I would want. Is the Up Box + noisy or complete silent?

Raise 3D N2+ has big size but I am concerned about large printing generating more fume and it is also recommended to leave the cover open while printing PLA. Do we keep the door closed when printing PLA on the Up Box +?

Ultimaker 3 seems to be very reliable from what I read. However, don't like the longest axis is the z-axis due to lack of strength. The price is also too much.

Taz 6: Good size but I don't like the print quality and the noise.

Thanks Joseph. That is scary. What filament did they use?

Hi,

The air filter is mainly for ABS.

Octave sells many different materials from different vendors, and please be aware, all different brands of ABSs are not made equally. Some can generate more odor than the others. So, for ABS printing, it is better to have filters as a feature.

Thanks. What if I print only using PLA?

Hi,

PLA is much better when it comes to toxic fume while printing.

However, no one's PLA is pure PLA without additives. Having an air filter will help clean the air no matter what material you use.
