Nozzle problem UP2 Plus

Post by Robin » Wed Aug 31, 2016 11:35 am

Printer stopped on a nozzle temperature fault. I wobbled the wire and saw sparks.

I'd guess the element has boiled the tin out of the solder, arced and burnt the wire to a crispy carbon residue.

The printer is only 4 months old, bought it from Maplins, 9th may 2016

I have worked it hard, but what to do now?

It is covered under your 12 month warranty, contact place of purchase for more info.

Maplins wanted to swap the whole machine but I cannot be bothered to repack it so they are trying for a part. Their technician will call me back within 48hrs.

I also ordered, "New Thermocouple 24V 80W Cartridge Sensor Heating for UP 3D Printer Print Head" from that auction site. They cannot tell a thermocouple from a thermistor, no dimensions given and Economy shipping from China is 2-3 weeks away. The assembly looks to be a loose fit with Loctite, so I am presuming I can separate it with a bench press?

Is 24V 80W correct?

yes the UP nozzle heater uses a 24 volt, 80 watt cartridge heater.

Is this what you purchased?

It is not glue, just thermal paste.

Still no phone back from Maplin technical support

Parts have started arriving from my ebay foraging expedition. Still some way off an actual element, but the high temperature heat transfer guck has arrived and some copper crimps.

I have reattached the wire by crimp and it works. Slight worry about everything shorting out if another wire breaks but new elements are in the post and I am back in production.

Looks like this ebay UP! print head has grub screws to hold the heater and thermistor.

If this works I think I will buy a couple more, I could change heaters with even waiting for it to cool.
