Standard ABS usage. What to expect?

Post by ming » Thu Apr 03, 2014 9:36 am

If I do NOT get the premium AFinia / UP high temp ABS. And get a standard quality ABS. I realize the flowing temps are lower. What can I expect if I do not use a temperature controller ?

An awful smell from hot ABS, and poorer print quality because of the heat.
I use a lot of cheaper ABS now that I have temperature control, and at the correct temperature its fine.

It may depend on your ambient room temperature. I use cheaper ABS and have done so without any temperature mods for 2 years here in the UK, ambient between 17 - 27 degrees c. I only added a temperature mod when I wanted to print Ninjaflex etc.

cheers

Peter, what filament do you use?

When I say Awful smell and poor print, I'm specifically referring to this:

But at 245 degrees its perfect.

The terrible smell is the ABS off-gassing a lot more of course. This will also increase the likelihood of bubbles and subsequent blemishes in your print.

The higher temp will also make it hard to snap away support material and in some prints you might find it will not peel away at all.

Finally, it will cook the ABS so your nozzle will develop a build up of crud faster and need to be cleaned out.

You can use non genuine ABS without a temp mod but with it you get results just as good as genuine with all the advantages even though you are using a much cheaper filament.

Woofy,
I have tried several non oem white abs reels, one from cd writer, several from other sources on reels marked makerbot. Apart from the odd undersize sections I fond they work ok at standard temperature

Yes but with a temp mod they work brilliantly not just "ok" and essentially the same as genuine.
