How to remove the remaining ABS from the build platform?

Post by hajime » Tue Nov 05, 2013 6:58 am

Hello, I am unable to remove some of the remaining ABS from the build platform. I have used the shovel which came with the Up Plus 2 already. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

A lot of people like leaving it in the holes so freshly melted abs will stick to it. But if you don't, you can either pick them out (mine came with a tool to do about 15 holes at once) or you could probably soak it in acetone and let the abs dissolve.

I prefer just to scrape both sides smooth, then wipe some acetone over the side you will print on.

Thanks. I will try to get acetone.

It seems to me that it is easier to remove everything from a freshly made model. I noticed that if I let the machine to print and returned few hours later, it became more difficult to remove the raft from the build plate. Perhaps it is better to keep the post heat on?

You should be able to use the supplied scraper to scrape it smooth, don't worry about getting the plastic out of the holes. Use the gloves the first few times you use the scraper ... it is very sharp and you have to know how it will behave before it bites you.

This is a very handy thing for scraping material from perfboard and prints; it makes the process much safer and easier:

The scraper that comes withe the Up will remove all of the material shown in your photo. One edge is bevelled - use it flat side down on the perfboard. It's very sharp, be careful.
