Cabling problems

Post by Astro » Tue Dec 31, 2013 6:12 am

Hi All.
I successfully fixed my Up! today, but I thought I would share what I found;

Common; Extruder fan intermittently would turn on and off.
Rare; Printing would cease but power to the printer would remain on.

Fault finding Method and Diagnosis;
I suspected a cable fault due to the intermittent nature of the fault. I wiggled the cable at various points in attempt to cause the fault. By flexing the cable at various points I was able to isolate the location of the fault. In this case the defect was about 10mm up from the connector on the extruder head. I could also feel a kink.

I replaced the 8 x 2 IDC connector. I had to take care not to limit the travel of the extruder head doing so. In the future I will replace the entire cable.

It seems that my ribbon cables might have a lifespan, upon further inspection I noticed they cable appeared weathered. This could be compounded by the fact that I use and enclosure for my printer. One thing of interest is that when I compared my ribbon cable against pictures of others on the internet, I didn't see much consistency in colour coding.

I hope this may help someone else.
