Spam fighting...

Post by admin » Wed Oct 24, 2012 1:55 pm

Hello board,

We are getting flooded by spams more and more these days. In order to fight it, we have implemented the mechanism, suggested by some of our veterans on board, that all the posts created by new registered users will be moderated. Only after 5 valid posts will the user be free from monitoring.

We hope this will keep our forum free of spam for a while, and for the new users or users that have not posted 5 posts, please bear with us, your posts will be delayed displaying in the forum.

Thank you for your support and understanding.

Happy printing.

That's great news, thank you.
Let's all hope this sees the end of the spam.

Nice one fella's, glad some genius came up with that one......

May I also add, it would be useful to have on the registration screen that all new members are moderated (but omit the number of posts required) this way it may deter them from even trying to register in the first place.

Hi,
I moderate on a couple of other boards with similar spam problems. We have implemented a similar strategy and find we generally only have to put the moderation restriction on the first couple of posts and ban accounts immediately on really obvious spam. More than that and new users were getting upset, especially when they were seeking setup advice in hurry.

I was also thinking 5 posts would be too many...the first post will be enough to decide whether it is crap or not IMO

For some reason we find a few spam posters post 2 at a time. 2 seems to be enough to defeat them - of course discusses the limit in a public post probably defeats the purpose - they do seem to do their research. We discuss spam fighting in a moderators only post. So admin ... when/if you change it again ... don't tell us publicly :)

Hi all
and now we have fdhdxs9t posting spam on his/her/its first post - and in the Official Announcements forum in the Spam fighting threat of all places. That is really outrageous. fdhdxs9t and the crappy spam that he/she/it has posted should be removed from the forum as soon as possible.

Aha, good to know 4sd4n66g8 I was wondering what was happening with the Zhang brothers! It is also good to know that there is some one with enough time to post stuff like this and get some kind of kick out of it!
This must be a new experiance for you compared to sitting around with your thumb up your butty?

Hi all
They are really cheeky.
Not only do they put their spam crap on our forum, but they put it in the Spam Fighting thread.
There is obviously a break down in the anti-spam measures.
Maybe, to post on the forum, we should have to do some sort of input like having to type in a random word shown on the screen so that the post can't be automatically generated.
Regards
Lawrence

Hi, It seems that the intruder was a bit offended by my remark about this thumb up her/hiss butty. He/she followed me into another forum and posted the same craziness there. :D Now that's a classic example of to much spare time!

Cheers

Haha  I was just going to create a topic about this because it took a long time for one of my previous posts to come up. I like the idea!

They are getting pretty clever now !
The only way to make not worth their while would be to remove links in signatures or posts until they have been approved after a number of posts. What a nightmare though
