General moulding and casting thread

Hey ANZUPers!

I started a thread for the discussion and throwing around of ideas pertaining to any kind of moulding and casting.

I have been interested in doing this for quite a while but the products dont seem to be available in wollongong/area.
I dont like buying things over the internet but it looks like i will have to get a aust post visa debit card and take the plunge.

silicone rubber seems to be the way to go for making moulds that will last.
Ive seen videos of resins that cure from the inside to the outer wall that is just fun ti watch.

are there any chain stores/store types that carry the silicone rubber and casting resins. I live in the illawarra [nsw]. its hard to find niche items here for some ridiculous reason.

I know that i can by the stuff online, uncomfortable with buying online and personally rather to walk in to a store a buy it.

I go to my local craft stores for them (like Eckersleys - different stores have slightly different stock) but it's extortionately expensive compared to online. I once got some from Spotlight even.

and the local stores often have only the smallest containers of the stuff as well.
its aggravating. I was wondering, there have to be industrial users of silicone rubber and resins [various].

perhaps if we could track down one of those users we could buy it through them at a cheaper price, kind of like buying alginate from your dentist, i got a bag for $15 once.

Im a school teacher and would like to use mold making and casting [probably plaster] as a class activity. but the cost kills it at the moment.

Don't know if this helps. In UK and I guess internationally RS (RadioSpares) sell an Epoxy Kit, as a potting compound at around £12 per 500g. Part number 199-1468 I use it for potting electronic circuits that are used in harsh marine environments.

Hi,

I know quite a bit about moulding and casting and happy to share the knowledge. This was the main reason behind purchasing my UP so as to make prototypes/masters for this purpose. I have good knowledge of low melt alloys and passable with polyester and polyurethane resins along with the moulding processes especially for low volume runs.

If you wish to purchase materials then these companies I have used and are quite reliable. They both supply from really small to really large quantities.

Hi

I am finally up and running with my Up and have been excited by the results that I have been getting.

Most prints have gone well, but I have had a few minor problems such as working out how to get TurboCad Pro to draw internal threads in 3D so that I could make a fitting to fit a Dremel, and some failures in trying to print a Tardis for my daughter. All my Tardis prints failed making me come to the conclusion that there must have been some time shift phenomina going on causing the model to displace on the perf board.

Like Rollem, one of my reasons for getting into 3D printing is so that I can create prototypes for casting. Most of my experience to date has been with silicone moulds and resin.

Recently saw the 2 part putties that are available in a few places. For the ones available in Australia, has anyone used them or have any experience with them, which are the best bang for buck and which should be avoided?

Food save would be good, cost/amount makes a big difference.

Has anyone tried 3d printing moulds for rubber components?

I've used a food-grade silicone from Barnes http://www.barnes.com.au/. Worked fine.
There is also Aldax http://www.aldaxstore.com.au/
