Any interest in hardened nozzles (Group Buy?)

Post by Owen Sparks aka Marksman » Tue Oct 03, 2017 11:34 am

Hi folks.

I understand TT intend to introduce different size nozzles at some stage but I've not seen anything on hardened nozzles.

I'm impressed with some carbon fiber loaded prints I've made on a different machine and thought it's be nice to do the same on the UP printers. (Carbon filament is getting cheaper by the day, but our current soft brass nozzles will be eaten away very quickly if we use it as CF is highly abrasive.)

So I've had a chat to a nozzle manufacturer and they'd be interested in making nozzles for us, but the price is of course dependent on volume.

So with that in mind if you have any interest in custom nozzles please say hello in this thread. Nothing binding, nothing decided yet, just gauging interest.

Cheers,

Owen S.

Thanks folks.

I'll leave this thread open for another week or so and then look at getting parts.

Cheers

Hello Owen,

I am using 3rd party nozzles on the mini for quite some time. The original nozzles are wearing quickly when using metal or carbon filaments. With a special hardened and coated nozzle I am printing many kg without any nozzle wear. See here:
https://store.micro-swiss.com/collectio ... -up-plus-2

There are many other 3rd party nozzles you can use, e.g. the E3D nozzles for 3mm filament work fine as well. There are steel versions readily available.

Cheers,
Kai

Hi Kai, thanks for taking the time to jump in.

As far as I can see (and I really hope I'm wrong) all the aftermarket hardened nozzles have a course male thread on them. The UPBOX, UPBOX+ and MINI2 all use a nozzle with of all things an M6 Fine female thread. I've not searched extensively but I cant find anything that will work out of the box.

It does raise the thought of making / commissioning an adapter and then using these nozzles. Means it's an one off expense + a greater nozzle offset rather than presumably more expensive bespoke nozzles each time...

I'd value your opinion here.

Cheers,

Hello Owen,

you are right I still use an old mini with a different nozzle. Great idea though, the issue with such an adapter would be the heat transportation...
Micro Swiss has probably the right nozzle for you here:

I was having that thought this morning myself. I've been looking for some different nozzle sizes for different materials, and the internal threaded ones seem very hard to come by. If we had an adaptor, it would solve so many issues. The only thing I can see as being a problem is nozzle height...but we can adjust for that.

The internal threaded model seems like a step backwards with compatibility...

Morning folks.

Thanks for your thoughts

Kai- Ta for the link. Looks ideal, I'm marking this as "Plan B".

I've decided I like the adapter idea enough to at least try it so I've ordered a hand-full of assorted nozzles and an M6x0.75 set of taps.

Watch this space...

But it is big step forward in the "You'll have to buy our nozzles, and only our nozzles, and at whatever price we think of compatibility"

Yeah pretty much what I was hinting at.

I did find a 0.5 that might be compatible...it's 6mm internal threaded, but looks a bit odd...8AUD so might be worth the experiment.

It's at the bottom of that list...can't link to it directly unfortunately.

OK bits are starting to arrive :)

Rev 0.1 of the adapter isn't looking too robust a solution.

Hi Tegregg, sure thing. Hopefully we've moved on from custom nozzles to just an adaptor to take standard ones, providing things go well.

Real work is intruding today so only a small update:-

Work-piece holding soft-jaws came out well so we're a small step closer. Taps haven't arrived so will chase that. Hope to cut metal tomorrow.

Cheers,
