PLA vs. ABS and up! settings general questions

Post by goopyplastic » Sun Oct 07, 2012 3:16 am

I have yet to print with PLA, but have some questions.

From what I understand if you print with PLA you simply select a new spool and PLA as the material type. This will lower the extruding temperature to 200c

It looks like the heatbed will still try to get to 100c, isn't this way above the 60c target for PLA? Will this have negative consequences?
Any idea if any other settings on the printer are changed when PLA is selected, different printing profiles / retraction rates etc..

Given the success with adding resistors to the temp sensor to lower extruding temp, maybe it is a good idea to lower the bed temp as well?

No the bed temp reduces also. To about 50C from memory.

I always print PLA with a fan on the right side of the printer. You could use a table fan and point it roughly towards the print area, it also cools the stepper motor a bit to reduce the chance of skipping.

Also: if you use version 1.16 or 1.17 of the software, maybe try 1.15 if the models have some imperfections like stringing or lumps. I had better results with 1.15 and PLA and I think the retraction rates are in fact different.
