Connecting Multiple Printers to a Single PC

Post by UPer_Lbo » Mon Aug 13, 2012 2:57 pm

Hi,

I have multiple UP! Plus printers that I wish to be setup to run simultaneously from a single PC. However when I connect mutliple printers to a single desktop PC the UP! software does not seem to be able to distinguish between them. Does anybody know how you would run multiple printers off of one pc (other than connecting each usb individually- uploading the file to a printer - setting it to run and then disconnecting it before moving onto the next one)? Is there a way for you to change the identity of each printer so the PC can determine which is which?

Any help would be greatly appreciated and as this is my first post I would like to state how great the UP! Printers really are – fantastic little things!

Thanks.

If the Up software is not set up to talk to multiple printers then I doubt that it's possible. Even if you had two different USB host adapters in your PC, I don't see how you would tell the application (or multiple copies of the application) which printer it's supposed to talk to. But maybe there's some kind of "USB mapper" utility program I'm not aware of.

If there's such a thing as a USB A-B switch (like a KVM switch) then you could use that to manually switch back and forth without having to plug and unplug cables.

We will have a USB over Lan device coming soon. Supports up to 4 UP all connected. To switch between them is just a software switch.

Something like this might work: http://www.ambery.com/2in4outusb20.html
You would have to switch between each printer, start the print and then switch to the next.
However, my experience of USB switches has not been great - the Belkin KVM tends to do weird things like repeating USB keystrokes or missing them completely.

My other thought was to look into Virtualisation - maybe you can assign different USB ports to each Virtual PC installation and then run them all at the same time.

Something else to also keep in mind is whether the calibration information that gets entered into the Up software (for a particular printer) gets transferred to the printer or continues being used by the software. If the latter, then each separate printer will receive incorrect calibration information with each print.

I'm actually wanting to do the reverse of this scenario... use two different computers with the same printer. So the above technicality may be a nuisance for me, as well, if the calibration information has to be with the software. I recall posts from a while ago of others who were planning on doing this. I'll need to find them again.
