Loud x-axis clicking noise, cannot identify source

Post by hahvahdsquah » Sat Jul 20, 2013 8:43 pm

Hi,

I just set up a brand-new UP! Plus and haven't had any issues other than noticing a very loud clicking noise that occurs when the x-axis moves. I stopped my first print job halfway because I didn't want to damage anything. I unplugged the machine, took the x-axis cover off and moved the platform back and forth manually, and determined that the clicking always occurs in four distinct locations, in both directions. For the life of me, I cannot identify the source of the sound, and can't see any obvious mechanical parts bumping together that would cause a click. I took video while doing this:

Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced it before? I used an UP! Plus in an academic setting all last year and never had this occur. I just got this one for home and it looks like there are some slight design changes (the platform heater cable assembly looks like it's been improved) so I'm not sure if the clicking is just normal with this design, or if something's wrong. Any insight would be appreciated.

Also, I tried searching the forums for "clicking" but all that comes up is related to clogged nozzles.

Weird. My best guess is it is something running on the underside of the carriage that is popping into the bolt holes of the linear rail. The sound always seems to line up with the same location relative to the holes though it could be coincidence as there are so many bolts/holes in that rail. It's definitely not every hole being "clicked" on if it is.

what the problem is, the gear on the steeper shaft is slightly loose. Remove the belt, slide the great off the stepper shaft, slap some PVA glue on, leave to dry over night and it will be sorted.

To clarify, the cause of the problem is that the flat on the motor shaft is slightly clear of the flat on the inside of the gear, and under the not inconsiderable tension of the belt pulls the gear's flat against the shaft's flat when the orientation is correct, causing the click.
Bruce, the PVA fix on my machine has not proved to be permanent, the click is coming back. I would suggest that epoxy might be more suitable for future fixes. For my machine, next time I have it apart I will put metal shim into the gap. That'll shut it up for good.
