Filament-recommendations for epoxy-casting

Post by brainzilla » Wed Jun 22, 2016 5:39 pm

Hi!

Does anyone have some experience with casting epoxy (and also PUR) 2-component resins?
I have Polypropylene (PP) cups, those remove perfectly after casting since PP is a low surface-tension material.
As there is not that much PP filament on the market I was wondering if it can be substituted with another filament?

Basically I want a material that I can print on my Mini and that doesn't need any release-agent.

getting 3mm pp filament is quite easy, just need to look at right place... the problem with it is that's warping like crazy so not easy printing if you don't have chamber... also, I tried epoxy casting (standard 2part AB epoxy, tried also acrylic) and it is not leaving the mold easily at all :( .. problem is that wall is unsmooth an the epoxy/acrylic fill the gaps and removing it is damn hard, in my experience, impossible without damaging the mold :(

it's much easier to use wax casting and you can get incredible filament for wax casting from Kai Parthy!! his filament, MOLDLAY, kicks ass for casting!!! I tried it with bronze and alu and acrylic and even with abs and .. kicks ass :D

dunno if you heard about the guy .. he's nuts, his filaments are craaaaaaaaaazy good !! .. the wood one, the ceramic one (don't use ceramic one on up, up's extruder can't handle it), the foam and felt ones ... craaaaaaaaaaaazy ... recently I purchased some reflective one from him .. daaaamn that's cool .. look at the example:

now with flash, check out how it glows, reflective, it glows waaaaaaaaay more then that paint on the street signs or those reflective stickers for your car/bicycle

(I don't get anything by "advertising" him, I'm just a happy user purchasing filament from him as it's freaking best ... google what else he has, just use his name and "filament" :D ... there's "non warping abs" .. crazy stuff .. I wish I live in Germany so the shipment is not that much, they guy is awesome)

btw I tried smoothing the printed PP with different means (different sandpapers, stones, belts, ) without solving the problem of epoxy sticking in the creases between layers .. maybe some chemical solution exist (like acetone vapors for abs) but I couldn't find anything for PP that is not turbo unhealthy so I gave up

some PP sample prints

ignore the blobs and seams, its 6yo skeinforge, not the best slicer on the planet, but getting finer layers then 0.30mm with PP is super hard to get .. the only possible solution would be to get it smooth with some solvent, but for that you need organic solvents, they are all poisonous to the extreme .. stuff like p-xylene or o-xylene or toluene or decaline .... none of them available in grocery store none of them safe to have around kids or animals

one other thing, you can get PVA filament (you can get it from Kai too) it disolves in water... make a mold, fill it in, drop it in water, come in 24h and remove your epoxy :D

Thanks for the feedback everybody!
So it's gonna be print, fill, sand, coat, silicone-mold, cast.

you have some links here: http://3dprintingindustry.com/news/new- ... t-1-67294/

you can contact Kai Parthy on facebook directly (if you can access fb from where you are, just search for Kai Parthy) and discuss with him if you need larger quantities or you want to discuss details or want to resell his stuff and make special material for UP! that can handle this filament :D that would be great :)
