Re: Will you teach your kids 3D modeling/printing?
Hi.
Probably not.
Not that I'm against it just that I believe it will be so mainstream soon that using 3D modeling will be as common as using a word processor or spreadsheet was in my school work. Likewise buying a printer will be as every day as buying a toaster or a circular saw. In other words it'll just be covered in everyday life / school so no special consideration required.
Just my thoughts.
Cheers,
Owen S.

Hi.
No, not a teacher, I'm a 42 year old engineer.
I was pleased to see recently the Company Dremel (they make hobby rotary craft tools if you're not familiar with them) now have their own brand 3d printer. In my mind this is a company recognizing that their hobby / craft hand tool market may be about to shrink. Instead of ignoring this and going out of business they've invested in where hobby "making stuff" user may be headed.
Just the opposite of blockbuster video rental who just died overnight.
As for when or if 3D printers will be present in every home or business I couldn't say, but I'd be amazed if my children go to a shop to buy door handle or a coat hook by the time they're my age.
Regards,
Owen S.

In the UK £700-£1000 so approx $1000 US. No idea if it's any good but it was interesting to see a hand tool company investing in this tech.stellaxin wrote:Hi Owen,

Re: Will you teach your kids 3D modeling/printing?
since bosch got them they are making all kind of moves, this printer story is actually bosch's management afaih not the dremel's .. bosch is using their name to hit hobbyists market bit harder

Why not? It's a skill after all.
Better than to have a 12yr old who knows only COD and GTA online, living the highlife of entitlement…

Re: Will you teach your kids 3D modeling/printing?
I doubt anything dremel/bosch do will affect if those 12yo lean towards 3d printing or towards gta or just plain drinking in front of the store .. kids don't listen, they copy, so it's mostly up to us if they are going to have these or those values, interests..

Re: Will you teach your kids 3D modeling/printing?
Some NZ schools are already teaching kids how to design 3D models and print them.

Same here in Australia.
I am interested in the collective wisdom of this group.
As a public library what tips would you offer me in bringing 3D printing and scanning to our community. Any and all ideas welcome

John

bfb some years ago gave few hundred printers to schools in UK and iirc they then got funded and sold over thousand printers in schools all ovek UK ... there was a guy on bfb forum that was preparing different lectures for kids (end of primary school iirc .. 7th, 8th grade) where he was printing some landscapes, some mathematical functions, mathematical objects etc .. they were using the printer with number of classes ..
you should be able to find some of the useful doc's on education and 3d printing on their blog http://rapmanv3.blogspot.com/
not as good now that 3ds took over but should be still bunch of useful things there

what might be very interesting for this topic is Dejan Mitrovic from London ( http://www.dejanmitrovic.co.uk/ ) and his KIDE project! I met with him in 2011 no clue what's he doing these days but the kide website is down ( http://www.playkide.com/ ) but some content is available trough web archives: https://web.archive.org/web/20120308153 ... ykide.com/ .. might be that he gave up, dunno, lost contact .. if one is interested you can contact him he should have huge amount of data about small kids and modeling, small kids and 3d printing, 3d printing and education.. he invested a lot of time into that .. I see he has

3dvia aims to professional users for space design. 3dslash is easy for kids, but maybe suitable for small kids...
