How to make a picture into a 3d print

Post by TheSik1 » Sun Oct 11, 2015 8:09 pm

Hello everyone,

I'm very new to 3d printing and have recently bought n Up Box. I've have a request to take a picture that was drawn and make it a 3d print. I've tried useing Inkscape and Blender to make it work, but I'm having no luck. Any help for you guys would be great. I look forward to getting to know everyone and checking out your projects.

I'd recommend Ransen's Photo to mesh

Thanks for the help guys.

Basically what I'm trying to do is take the lettering only and make it into a 3d object. It will only be like an inch long by a half inch tall. The detail in the drawing isn't a big deal it doesn't really need to be there just the basic outline is all that needs to be printed. Just the "Inch Gang" and the legs is what I need the M.C.C. S.D part isn't needed. This is for a model car club that is here in California. I tried using InkScape and Blender to make it into something that I could work with but I haven't had any luck so far. I'm sure there is something that I'm doing wrong.

This is a very rough draft I tried to do with Inkscape and then I was using Blender to try to make it 3d, just to see if I could get it to work.

That looks pretty neat but it appears it only ships to Australia and New Zealand....

Edit- Nevermind, I went to the Software website and it appears it is also downloadable...

Yes, Ransen's software is ideal for this I have used it on many occasions, basically it generates a plate where the thickness is defined by the density of the image. many parameters can be set apart from overall plate size. The thickness, height, can be adjusted the initial image contrast and brightness adjusted to create desired height to density ratios, the bacsic minimum plate thickness, a filter can define how accurately the raised image represents the original, thereby removing very fine detail that would not print well in 3d, photographic noise being a good example. And the 3d model can be a positive or negative of the image. i.e. the original image black can be the thickest or thinnest part of the model. For photos the black should be thick for viewing when the model is backlit and thin when front lit. Backlit is much more impressive than front lit.
Also the Ransen software allows you to wrap the model into cylinders and other shapes. So for example the model could be wrapped tio a cylinder backlit by placing a lamp or candle inside the cylinder
cheers

Sweet that looks good. I ended up getting it with a 3d modeling software that I've used before that I was having a hard time getting. Now that I have it to use I pretty much got it. Thanks you guys for your help.

This process of converting an image into a 3d model is dead easy.
