Drawing a mesh in sketchup

Can anyone please tell me if there is a quick way of drawing/creating a mesh in Sketchup, (or maybe Form Z) apart from tediously drawing each line.
Searches on the net usually turn up "terrrain mesh", which is not what I want.
What I am trying to do is produce alpa and numeric character templates, and to save plastic I want to reduce the amount used in the supporting frame around each character.
Maybe I'm not using the correct term in my searches, but I can't think of what else to call it. I really don't care if the mesh is horizontal/vertical, or diagonal, or octagonal, but scaleable would be useful.
Thanks
Ian
