12V power fail. Blown motherboard?

While I wasn't watching, another hackspace member plugged in my first generation UP! and found it did not work. On troubleshooting I was baffled - it has been rock solid for years - until I just found he has used a 12V psu instead of the correct 5V one. It now doesn't work. Anyone got any ideas? Is ...

Re: where are you

I'm in the Midlands.

I'm also a director of the relatively new fizzPOP makerspace, which is a non-profit company in the manner of many hackspaces. The UP! is my own machine though, I was one of the early adopters, my machine was number 98, IIRC..

Re: Blue Tape - can't remove model

Why would you peel off the tape from the base if it stuck to it? Surely you'd just remove the raft and then it would be gone?

I was using blue masking tape for as long as it has been known, before perf board, and it rarely sticks hard to it. However, use a bit of perf board as it is better still.

Re: Interesting Comment About Up!'s Lineage

I doubt they will do a scanner, not for a small platform. What could you copy if it was much smaller? Not a lot, not at 0.1mm resolution on a what, 10x10x10 tiny platform? They might license out that Kinect scanning software or something, though. The other thing is, if it was a big company, surely t...

Yes, to all that.

But, give it a few more software iterations, and those issues will likely be gone. These guys are pretty hot at making things better.

Yes, it does do that, by design. It was a much requested feature!

Serves as a handy warning, too.

Re: CAD software

I've gone right off Alibre recently. I just don't think it is ready for prime-time. Which is crap because I've spent £ on it already. There are just too many things it cannot easily do that other programs seem to cope with fine. And the last "complex" model I did (probably a hundred dimensions, cons...

I was about to buy some, but on an order over £150, the shipping is another £30+!

I can get it posted cheaper from China!

Re: I can't print a 1cm cube, can you?

The first thing I printed, way, way back, was a 20x20x20mm cube. I even whacked the dimples in to make a D6. It printed perfectly, and it was within +/-0.1mm on all 3 dimensions. It wasn't perfect across the diagonals, but it was close enough that I didn't bother with calibration. I suspect there is...

Re: Has anyone had success printing the whistle, and how ?

I managed to get it to solve that issue, I needed to first chop a little off the tip so it was not a fine point contact at the base, then increase the support a little. Still couldn't print it, though, and I've decided it is impossible, at least without being able to change the model properly in CAD...

Re: Best setting for object strength ?

Wilson,

No, I just buy the cheap £ store stuff with about 12 tubes per pack, cut one open and pour it on in quantity. It wicks in fine, in my experience - it is "wetter" and less viscous than water.

Re: Using MakerBot filament

I've just installed a charcoal filter fan to draw the fumes off the ABS. I'm not sure if mine runs hot, but it sure stings my eyes and it is better not to breathe it. That's just the regular UP! supplied plastic, too. (My second reel of 3, all bought at the same time, was utterly stinky!) It could b...

Re: UP pricing

Don't forget that different countries have different import duties - with some it will be a few %, others it will be far bigger. e.g. import a circuit board into the UK and it costs nothing in duty, but import a bag of bits to make the circuit board, and it adds 3% duty! (Obviously this doesn't affe...

Re: Support layer issue using Google Sketchup

I've just been having a support issue with the software too, and I noticed the same thing. I print onto a 2mm raft normally, on a copper tracked veroboard surface, with good results, but a print last night failed. http://rubbertreeplant.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/whistle-base-issue-3.jpg I tho...
